How Low Temperature Testing Works – Process & Importance

  • Low Temperature Testing using a Universal Testing Machine (UTM) is a specialized mechanical testing process used to evaluate material behavior under extremely cold temperatures and mechanical loading conditions. In this setup, the UTM is integrated with a low-temperature chamber or environmental chamber capable of achieving temperatures down to -195 °C, along with suitable grips, extensometers, temperature sensors, and thermal insulation. This enables accurate tensile, compression, bend, and fatigue testing while the specimen is maintained at the required low temperature, closely simulating demanding service environments. Such testing helps determine strength retention, ductility, deformation behavior, fracture characteristics, toughness, and resistance to brittle failure at sub-zero temperatures.

This type of testing is widely used for aerospace materials, cryogenic equipment, stainless steels, low-temperature alloys, pipelines, pressure vessels, automotive components, and advanced engineering materials used in aerospace, defence, energy, oil & gas, and cryogenic industries. Low Temperature UTM Testing supports material qualification, product development, R&D, failure analysis, and compliance with applicable international standards, helping ensure that materials and components maintain their required mechanical performance and structural integrity under extreme cold conditions.

Tensile Testing Gripping – Process & Importance

Very Low Temperature Tensile Test

Very low temperature tensile testing at MIC Labs is carried out using advanced Universal Testing Machines integrated with controlled low-temperature chambers capable of achieving temperatures down to -195°C. This testing evaluates the tensile strength, yield behavior, elongation, ductility, and fracture characteristics of materials under extreme cold and mechanical loading conditions. Precise temperature control, uniform specimen conditioning, and specialized low-temperature grips and extensometers ensure accurate and repeatable results under cryogenic conditions.

Very Low Temperature Compression Tests

Very low temperature compression testing is performed to evaluate the compressive strength, deformation behavior, and structural stability of materials under extreme cold conditions and compressive loads. The testing utilizes a Universal Testing Machine with specially designed compression platens, fixtures, and controlled low-temperature environments to ensure proper specimen alignment, uniform load application, and reliable results at sub-zero and cryogenic temperatures.

Very Low Temperature Flexural Tests

At MIC Labs, very low temperature flexural testing is used to evaluate the bending strength, deformation behavior, and fracture resistance of materials under extreme cold conditions. 3-point and 4-point flexural testing can be performed using suitable fixtures and controlled low-temperature environments. This testing is particularly valuable for metals, polymers, composites, ceramics, and other engineering materials used in aerospace, defence, cryogenic, LNG, automotive, and energy applications, supporting material qualification, R&D, performance validation, and failure analysis.

Tensile Testing Gripping Process

Specimen Alignment & Placement

The test specimen is positioned correctly to ensure axial loading and prevent bending stresses.
Alignment tools or guides may be used for precision placement.

Grip Selection Based on Material & Shape

Different types of grips are used depending on the material, thickness, and specimen shape:

  • Wedge Grips – Self-tightening for metals and composites
  • Hydraulic Grips – Uniform pressure distribution for high-strength materials
  • Pneumatic Grips – Suitable for delicate materials like textiles and films
  • Vice Grips – Basic mechanical clamping for simple applications
  • Threaded/Pin Grips – Used for wires, rods, and rebar testing

Clamping the Specimen

  • The grips are tightened to prevent movement without damaging the specimen.
  • If required, serrated or textured grips enhance friction to prevent slippage.

Load Application & Monitoring

  • The UTM applies a controlled increasing tensile force to the gripped specimen.
  • Sensors monitor stress-strain behavior, ensuring precise measurements.

How High Temperature Testing Works – Process & Importance

At MIC Labs, controlled Low Temperature Testing plays a vital role in evaluating the mechanical performance, strength, ductility, and fracture behavior of materials under sub-zero and cryogenic conditions. Keeping this requirement in view, MIC Labs has developed advanced low-temperature testing capabilities to conduct reliable and repeatable testing at temperatures down to -195°C, depending on the test method and specimen configuration.

Our experienced technical team is equipped to perform low-temperature tensile, compression, flexural, and fatigue testing using suitable fixtures, temperature-controlled chambers, grips, and measurement systems. Precise temperature control and uniform specimen conditioning help ensure accurate test results as per applicable ASTM, ISO, EN, IS, and customer-specific standards.

These testing capabilities support material qualification, product development, R&D, performance validation, and failure analysis for critical applications in aerospace, defence, cryogenic, LNG, oil & gas, automotive, energy, manufacturing, and academic research. Our low-temperature testing facility enables customers to evaluate material performance reliably under extreme cold conditions and ensure suitability for demanding service environments.

Measure India Corporation performs advanced mechanical testing under extreme elevated temperatures approaching 1600 degrees centigrade using furnace-integrated universal testing systems. The laboratory follows internationally accepted methods such as ASTM E21 and ISO 6892-2 to ensure precise temperature uniformity, controlled strain rates, and accurate high-temperature extensometry. These capabilities support the evaluation of superalloys, refractory steels, ceramics, and aerospace components where material behavior must be verified under real service conditions with reliable, traceable results.
