How High Temperature Testing Works – Process & Importance

  • Very High Temperature Tensile  up to 1600℃  in a Universal Testing Machine (UTM) is a specialized mechanical testing process used to evaluate material behavior under severe thermal and load conditions. In this setup, the UTM is integrated with a high-temperature furnace capable of reaching and maintaining temperatures up to 1600 °C, along with high-temperature grips, extensometers, and protective insulation. This allows accurate tensile, compression, or creep testing while the specimen is exposed to extreme heat, closely simulating real service environments. Such testing helps in understanding strength retention, deformation, fracture characteristics, and thermal stability of materials at elevated temperatures.

This type of testing is widely used for advanced materials such as superalloys, ceramics, refractory metals, aerospace alloys, and high-temperature composites used in aerospace, power generation, nuclear, and metallurgical industries. Extreme high temperature UTM testing supports material qualification, R&D, failure analysis, and compliance with international standards, ensuring components can safely withstand extreme operating conditions without loss of structural integrity or performance.

Tensile Testing Gripping – Process & Importance

Very High Temperature tensile test

Very high temperature tensile testing at MIC Labs is carried out using advanced Universal Testing Machines integrated with high-temperature furnaces capable of reaching extreme temperatures up to 1600°C. This testing evaluates the tensile strength, yield behavior, elongation, and fracture characteristics of materials under severe thermal and mechanical conditions. Precise temperature control, uniform soaking, and high-temperature grips and extensometers ensure accurate and repeatable results even at extreme operating temperatures.

Very High Temperature Compression Tests

Very high compression testing is performed to evaluate the compressive strength, deformation behavior, and stability of materials under extremely high loads and, when required, at elevated or very high temperatures. In this test, a Universal Testing Machine or heavy-duty compression testing system is used with specially designed compression platens, fixtures, and alignment tools to ensure uniform load application and accurate results, even at very high force levels.

Very High Temperature Flextural Tests

At MIC Labs, very high temperature flexural tests are widely used for evaluating ceramics, refractories, superalloys, and advanced high-temperature materials for aerospace, power generation, metallurgical, and thermal processing applications. This testing supports material qualification, R&D studies, performance validation, and failure analysis by providing critical insight into bending  behavior (3-point and 4 point) and structural stability under extreme thermal conditions.

Tensile Testing Gripping Process

Specimen Alignment & Placement

The test specimen is positioned correctly to ensure axial loading and prevent bending stresses.
Alignment tools or guides may be used for precision placement.

Grip Selection Based on Material & Shape

Different types of grips are used depending on the material, thickness, and specimen shape:

  • Wedge Grips – Self-tightening for metals and composites
  • Hydraulic Grips – Uniform pressure distribution for high-strength materials
  • Pneumatic Grips – Suitable for delicate materials like textiles and films
  • Vice Grips – Basic mechanical clamping for simple applications
  • Threaded/Pin Grips – Used for wires, rods, and rebar testing

Clamping the Specimen

  • The grips are tightened to prevent movement without damaging the specimen.
  • If required, serrated or textured grips enhance friction to prevent slippage.

Load Application & Monitoring

  • The UTM applies a controlled increasing tensile force to the gripped specimen.
  • Sensors monitor stress-strain behavior, ensuring precise measurements.

How High Temperature Testing Works – Process & Importance

At MIC Labs, maintaining a well-structured Quality sample preparation plays a key role in generating accurate and repeatable test data. Keeping this in view, MIC Labs initiated the establishment of its own sample preparation workshop in 2023. Over time, we have developed a state-of-the-art machining center to extract, prepare, and polish test specimens according to various ASTM, ISO, and IS testing standards.

Our experienced machinists are highly skilled in preparing specimens with tight tolerances as required by the aerospace, defense, manufacturing industries, crucial research projects, and academic programs.

The in-house workshop has also enabled MIC Labs to undertake high-volume testing contracts while ensuring quality and timely deliverables.

Measure India Corporation performs advanced mechanical testing under extreme elevated temperatures approaching 1600 degrees centigrade using furnace-integrated universal testing systems. The laboratory follows internationally accepted methods such as ASTM E21 and ISO 6892-2 to ensure precise temperature uniformity, controlled strain rates, and accurate high-temperature extensometry. These capabilities support the evaluation of superalloys, refractory steels, ceramics, and aerospace components where material behavior must be verified under real service conditions with reliable, traceable results.
